Boston Applied Technologies Incorporated
Awarded $1,750,000 Grants/Contracts from NASA, NSF and OSD

Woburn, MA, June 10, 2004 - Boston Applied Technologies announced today that it has been recently awarded three Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)/Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grants, totaling $1,750,000, from NASA, NSF, and the Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD).

NSF has awarded BATI a Phase II grant of $500,000 to further develop and commercialize an ultra-fast wavelength selective platform technology for the applications of hyperspectral imaging, environmental monitoring and optical communications. Upon completion of the Phase II program, BATI is confident to introduce a variety of wavelength selective components and hyperspectral imaging system to the marketplace, which will outperform those mechanical and liquid crystal ones in terms of size, speed, reliability and working range.

The SBIR Phase II award from OSD, $750,000, will allow BATI to aggressively develop nanostructured ferroelectric materials for ultrahigh density energy storage systems. The outcome of the program will find uses in many military and commercial applications, such as directed energy weapons, countermeasure pulse generators, electromagnetic catapults, radar modulators, pulsed lasers, and electric automobiles.

In the Phase II STTR award received from NASA ($500,000), BATI will team up with University of Minnesota to develop novel Magnetophotonic Crystals and Optical Devices. The materials and devices to be developed in the program provide a complete solution to integrated optical circuitries in both NASA and commercial fiber optic communication systems.

Dr. Hua Jiang, President and CEO of BATI, commented, “we value these government funds as the recognition to BATI’s technology strength and a critical bridge to the successful commercialization of our products. The extra financial resource will no doubt enable us to aggressively follow through our commercialization strategy and also strengthen our core business.”
