  • Based upon our strong material foundation and expertise in micro-optic device and packaging design, Boston Applied Technologies Incorporated (and its former entity, Corning Applied Technologies) developed a variety of photonic materials and components for telecommunication and instrumentation applications.BATI has three trademarks for its product portfolio. They are:

    • EclipseTM, trademark for light intensity controlling device family;
    • AcrobatTM, trademark for polarization management device family;
    • EquinoxTM, trademark for wavelength profiling device family.

    Electro-optic Ceramics
    OptoCeramic® materials are a family of transparent ceramics with exceptional high electro-optic coefficient and fast response speed. Compared to single-crystals and liquid crystals, the advantages of OptoCeramic® materials include:
  • High electro-optic effect (100 times better than LiNbO3),
  • Fast electro-optic response (sub-microsecond, orders of magnitude better than LC),
  • Transparent in a broad band (500 nm-7000 nm),
  • Very low loss,
  • Solid-state operation
  • Ceramic ruggedness, and most importantly,
  • Lowest cost.

  • EclipseTM Light Intensity Management Devices
    For light intensity management, Boston Applied Technologies provides a complete solution through its EclipseTM line. The EclipseTM Variable Optical Attenuator (VOA) offers optical power control solutions for both single-wavelength, such as in pre-emphasis, and multi-wavelength, such as in EDFA, applications. The VOA is well received in the marketplace because of its high reliability (passed full Telcordia qualification) and high performance (the fastest VOA). No failure has been reported since the VOA first reached in the market in 1999. The EclipseTM family includes:

  • Variable Optical Attenuator (VOA);
  • Polarization Insensitive Modulator (PIM);
  • Polarization Maintained VOA (PMVOA);
  • Micro VOA (µVOA, the smallest VOA);
  • Add/Drop VOA (A/DVOA);
  • Shutter VOA (Provide complete power shutoff);
  • Slope VOA (Control light intensity while adjust wavelength slope);
  • VOA Array (Multi-channel optical power adjustment. 4-, 8-, and 16-chanel);
  • Optical Power Regulator/Limiters.

  • AcrobatTM Light Polarization Management Devices
    BATI (and CAT) was one of the first companies that introduced polarization-controlling devices to the marketplace with no moving parts. OptoCeramic® technology enables high speed (200 ns), solid-state light polarization management in a compact package. The Polarization Controller/Polarization Transformer (PC/PT) converts any input state of polarization (SoP) to any output SoP by sending electronic signals to each independent retardation plates. The Dynamic Polarization Rotator (DPR) rotates the light beam while preserves its polarization property. The Polarization maintaining tap monitor (PM-tap) gives 3% to 5% tap output of P- or S-polarization component through an integrated photodetector. The Polarization Control Module (PCM) adds PM-tap, electronics, and control algorithm to a PC/PT to give a complete packaged system with fixed linear polarized light output. BATI's polarization sensor provides the fastest SoP detection and enables high performance polarimeters. Products in the AcrobatTM family are:

  • Polarization Controller/Polarization Transformer (PC/PT);
  • Dynamic Polarization Rotator (DPR);
  • Polarization Maintaining Tap Monitor (PM-tap);
  • Polarization Sensor (PS);
  • Polarization Modulators;
  • Polarization Control Module (PCM).

  • EquinoxTM Wavelength Profiling Devices
    The Variable Gain Tilting Filter (VGTF) provides Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) gain equalization and tilting for optical amplifiers with either a tilted or a parabolic profile. The Dynamic Gain Flattening Filter (DGFF), based on a harmonic filter design, dynamically smoothes out any non-linearity in optical amplifier gain curves and allows power equalization for DWDM systems at a lower resolution, while the Dynamic Spectrum Equalizer (DSE) adjusts each wavelength channel individually and gives the highest resolution in power equalization.

  • Variable Gain Tilt Filter (VGTF);
  • Dynamic Gain Flattening Filter (DGFF);
  • Dynamic Spectrum Equalizer (DSE).

  • Other products available at BATI include:
  • Optic Shutters;
  • Phase Modulators;
  • Multifunction Arrayed devices;
  • Optical Switches;
  • Tunable Optical Filters; and
  • Portable X-ray.

    BATI’s technologies are protected by 13 US and international patents and many pending patents.
